We help each other see the forest…
Here's an example of how it's sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees, so to speak, when you're so close up in your own process that you forget to see the the larger scope and even the meaning of things:
I was having a coaching session with a colleague of mine and I brought to the session the topic of some discomfort I was having around making a decision on something that was good for my business but required a little bit of a financial investment.
And I was watching all these thoughts come up like “should I or shouldn't I?” “Is this a good decision or a bad decision?”
I knew I wanted to do it, but I just wanted to get clear on what was all the turmoil about.
And after some discussion, I came to this realization, with his help, that I was trying to control the outcome.
I was trying to predict the future.
It was less about whether or not I was making the right decision and more that some part of me was trying to do all that controlling and and future predicting because I was trying to avoid the discomfort!
So, the reframe of the situation was to think:
What if at this stage of what I'm doing It was just true that there would be discomfort — and that could be okay…
And it it hit me like a ton of bricks because so much of what I like to coach and teach and practice has to do with acceptance of discomfort so that you can move towards the values and goals that you have! It doesn't mean gritting your teeth and and making more suffering for yourself necessarily, but rather, opening up to all the experiences and feelings that would come.
But I couldn't see it in my own self!
The practices that we do whether it's physical exercise, meditation, or even psychotherapy — Are we able to apply those lessons and experiences to a broad scope of areas of our life?
I think this is why sometimes getting some coaching helps: Not because we need someone else to tell us what to do (that's not what coaching is). It's that sometimes It's helpful to have an outside eye reflect back to you your situation and help open up and evoke new awarenesses so that you can see with more clarity where you need to go…
If you’d like to explore how coaching can help, I suggest booking an Alignment Wayfinding Session!
We’ll discuss what issues you’re dealing with, where you feel stuck, and where you’d like to go. And if you’re a good fit for my programs, I’ll let you know and you can ask any questions you may have about working together. Likewise, if you’d be better served with something or someone other than me, I’m happy to suggest or help you find your next steps forward.
Here’s to helping each other see the forest!
