Making Peace with Your Body
Did you see this clip of Glennon Doyle on Jimmy Kimmel?
I love how she discovered two meanings in the phrase "Making Peace with your body":
1. How do you come to be at peace and accept your body as it is?
2. How do you use your body to make peace in the world?!
This resonated with me so much because much of the work I do with movement and mindset is not about training our bodies because we need them to be different....
I know what's more effective is developing the psychological capacity to fully accept our bodies, emotions, and thoughts as they are, and any training we do is for the purpose of taking steps toward what is most meaningful in our lives.
Here's 3 more phrases that help guide me on this topic:
Support your body so that it is capable of realizing the dreams you have in your mind:
To me this isn't about appearance or even health - it's about feeling capable and free to live out your dreams. And to me that's much more motivating than any vague health goal.
Make Movement Meaningful:
This is one of the foundations of my coaching program which is similar to the last one, but not only does it mean to pursue movements that involve your values, but also to practice movements in real world contexts of interacting with others and your environment rather than in the isolated laboratory of our studios and gyms. Aim to practice movement in context of the environment and done with purpose!
You are meant to live in peace:
This relates most closely with Glennon Doyle's statement. Try to remind yourself of this in any activity you do and see if you can find an element of peace anywhere you are... See how that changes your approach and your experience of life... and if the peace is being disrupted in the world, and in our communities, how can we use ourselves to stand up for peace? And isn't there an internal core of peace present when you do that?!
How do these statements resonate with you?
Peace,
Patrick
P.S.: I can't wait to read her latest book, We can do Hard Things. Have you read it yet?
